Adding tax

How to add tax to a towing invoice

Enter your charges as usual, then set the tax rate in the editor. The generator calculates the tax and shows it as its own line on the finished document, so the customer can see exactly what they are paying and why.

Tax added, or tax included

There are two ways operators handle tax, and the arithmetic is different for each. Getting it wrong either overcharges the customer or leaves you covering the tax yourself, so the generator supports both.

Tax added on top

Your charges, plus tax

Your listed rates are what you charge, and the tax is added on top. A $200 tow with 8% tax becomes $216 on the total line. This is the usual approach where tax is charged as a separate amount.

Tax included in your rates

Your charges already contain it

Your listed rate is the final price. The tax is worked out as the portion already inside that figure — it does not change the total. A $200 tow with 8% included tax still totals $200, with the tax shown as the part of it.

The difference matters at the total line, not in the arithmetic: added tax makes the total higher than the sum of your charges, included tax does not.

Towing invoice with tax example

A tow with tax added on top at 8%. These amounts are illustrative; use your own rates and your own jurisdiction’s rate.

DescriptionQuantityRateAmount
Hook-up fee1$125.00$125.00
Loaded mileage12 mi$4.50$54.00
Winching / winch-out1$95.00$95.00
Storage — overnight1$35.00$35.00
Subtotal$309.00
Sales tax @ 8%$24.72
Total due$333.72

Use the tax-included mode instead and the same job still totals $309.00, with the tax shown as the portion inside it rather than added to it.

Which rate applies, and to what

This varies by state, by county, and sometimes by city, and towing is treated differently from ordinary retail in some places. The generator will apply whatever rate you enter — it does not look one up for you.

The rate is yours to set

Enter the rate that applies to your business and location. Because rates vary, the tool will not guess one.

Check what is taxable

Some jurisdictions tax the full tow, others exempt certain recovery or storage charges. Confirm what applies before you bill.

Keep it on the document

Showing the rate and the amount separately is what lets a customer verify the total, and what backs you up if it is questioned.

This page is general information about using the generator, not tax advice. Rates, exemptions, and registration requirements differ by jurisdiction — confirm yours with your state or local tax authority.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add sales tax to a towing invoice?
Yes. Enter your charges, then set the tax rate in the editor. The generator adds the tax and shows it as its own line, so the customer can see the rate and the amount.
What if my prices already include tax?
Switch to the tax-included mode. The generator works out the tax as the portion already inside your listed prices, so the total stays the same and the tax is shown separately rather than added on.
Does the tool know my local tax rate?
No. Rates vary by state, county, and city, and towing is treated differently from ordinary retail in some places. Enter the rate that applies to your business — the generator applies exactly what you give it.
Is towing taxable?
It depends on where you operate. Some jurisdictions tax towing services in full, others exempt certain recovery or storage charges, and rules differ between states. Confirm what applies to you with your state or local tax authority.
How is the tax shown on the PDF?
As a separate line between the subtotal and the total, labelled with the rate you entered. In tax-included mode it is shown as the portion inside the total instead of an addition to it.
Can I put a tax ID or registration number on the invoice?
The document carries your company details, including the address and phone number in the header. If a customer or your jurisdiction requires a specific tax identifier on the document, add it to your company details or the invoice notes.
Is this towing invoice with tax free?
Yes. Create and download your invoice without signing up or entering a credit card.
